I guess honesty is too much to ask for

I’d love to take this off your hands. My phone number is xxx-xxx-xxxx. My name is Rick Nelson. It has historical remembrance to my life I can get it anytime in the next day or two. I’d love to get it put it back to use.

This was in response to an ad I placed on Craigslist for my mom’s old sewing machine, a Sears Kenmore Model 54, that I had no idea if it worked or not. She hadn’t sewed in years. I put up the ad for it because it was still in good condition, likely could be repaired, and still had the original manuals and a ton of accessories. The thing is built like a tank. I offered it for free because I didn’t want it going into the junk heap.

Sears Kenmore Model 54 sewing machine

(Beautiful machine by the way. It’s not obvious from the picture but the machine is a cream color with lavender accents. Sorta looks like a grasshopper too. Really cool design!)

I’d had two responses to the ad, including one from a woman in Chicago who I had worked out the pickup details with who backed out about an hour before we were supposed to meet saying “I can’t be there till tomorrow. I was called in to work”. No response after that.

At the very least she had the courtesy to bow out somewhat gracefully. The guy claiming “historical remembrance” and leaving his phone number? Never heard a thing from him, either from my email response or texting the number he gave me.

I don’t get why people do this stuff. I get backing out but jeez just say you changed your mind. I was giving the thing away. At least have the decency to be honest.

Oh and Rick? Please stop with the stories. It just made you look like a schmuck.
